High-fiber personalized dietary advice reduces constipation

May 31, 2022

Sensus, together with the Maag Lever Darm Stichting (Dutch Digestive Foundation) and partners, supported research on how to increase fiber intake using a personalized nutrition approach. This research, conducted by Wageningen University, was recently published in the Journal of Nutritional Science.

The effect of fibers from diet could beneficially impact a stool pattern in adults with constipation complaints. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of a high-fiber personalized dietary advice on constipation severity, stool pattern and fiber intake in adults with mild constipation complaints. The personalized dietary advice provided high-fiber substitutes for habitually consumed low-fiber products. The advice was personalized based on gender and habitual dietary intake of the last month. The tool showed a participants' habitual intake per meal moment (breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-between meals) and high-fiber alternatives, which were ranked from high to low based on fiber content.

This study showed that personalized dietary advice was effective in increasing dietary fiber intake and subsequently improving constipation severity, stool consistency as well as quality of life.
